Overcoming Decision Fatigue: 3 Powerful Shifts to Build Stamina for Your Second Act

By Terry & Donna

The true secret to getting your energy back is overcoming decision fatigue. Most people our age think they are tired because they are fifty or sixty. They assume the fog they feel in the morning and lack of energy is just a natural part of getting older. Let me challenge that for a second.

If you are in your fifties or sixties and in the middle of rebuilding your life, you probably aren’t tired because you are old. You are tired because your brain is running a marathon every single day. It is a documented condition called Decision Fatigue. This is where you are forced to make hundreds of high-stakes choices every day that you used to make on autopilot. That drains your battery faster than physical work.

If you do not have a plan to manage that fatigue, you burn out. You stall. The real tragedy is that you start to believe you just do not have what it takes anymore. But you do. You just need a different kind of energy plan. Today, we are not talking about money or spreadsheets. We are talking about your vitality.

Here are the 3 shifts Terry and I made to regain the physical and mental stamina we needed to actually enjoy this second act we are building.

1. Identify Hidden Leaks and Start Overcoming Decision Fatigue

When I had to build my life over from scratch after leaving my abusive ex, I was exhausted before I even started to look at the problems I had to solve. I was thankful Terry was there, even though he was going through his own hell at the time. My hidden leak was that I was already drained from the exhaustion of the past five years of my own personal hell, and I hadn’t given myself a chance to breathe. But once I had my first good night of sleep in years, I realized, with support, that I could not only protect myself, but I could protect my energy as well.

When your life is in transition, your energy goes toward defense. You are constantly worrying about the next bill, the next job application, or the next unknown. Think of your energy like a bank account. If you wake up with a hundred dollars of energy, but worry steals forty dollars and decision fatigue steals another forty, you are left with twenty dollars to actually build your future.

To fix this, we created a simple structure for our day. By automating our routines, we stopped negotiating with ourselves about what to do next. We simply executed the plan.

2. Use Movement as Fuel, Not Punishment

Once we stopped the mental leaks, we had to address the physical engine. When you are rebuilding, you do not exercise to look good; you exercise to get strong enough to carry the load.

Strength is a vital part of my signature True North Method, a life framework that we dive deeper into within The Estate Experience. I love being outdoors. We get to enjoy cycling, boating, camping, hiking, and downhill skiing. Terry loves cycling too, and he has always drawn strength from the challenge of obtaining his black belt. These activities require stamina. We changed our mindset and started training because we wanted to be ready for the adventure.

Movement also clears the fog. Just today, we were working on filming our next video. I almost stayed behind while Terry took our rescue dog out for a walk just so I could finish working on an update for our website and start working on this blog. I am a fixer and what I call a finisher, and my brain goes into overdrive wanting to finish tasks. However, I realized we cannot do big work with weak engines. Sometimes the solution comes when we are walking, not when we are stressing. Sometimes to gain strength you actually need to take a break from what you are doing.

3. Practice Internal Climate Control

Living where we do in Washington, we always check the news to see if it is going to snow. But you have to control the thermostat inside your own head before you face the day. We realized we needed a gatehouse for our minds.

We now prioritize silence before turning on the TV or checking emails. For me, that means sitting down with my Bible plan and praying before looking at a to-do list. Starting with quiet reflection sets your internal climate before the world tries to change it for you. For Terry, that means sitting down with his first cup of coffee before he has his second; I am joking, but seriously!

Your Next Steps for Overcoming Decision Fatigue

You are the architect of this new life, and the architect needs to be sharp. To get started on protecting your energy and overcoming decision fatigue, try these simple steps:

  • Create a morning routine: Automate your first hour to reduce daily choices.
  • Schedule movement: Take a walk when you feel stuck to clear your head.
  • Guard your mornings: Spend fifteen minutes in quiet reflection before checking your phone. Ok, I admit I am still working on this one. Although starting with my Bible Plan App first helps!

If your biggest energy leak is financial worry, we have a resource to help. Inside The Estate Experience, the very first thing we walk you through is the Strategic Navigator Bundle. It is a complete system to get the decision-making out of your head and onto paper so you can stop guessing and start planning. It is time to get your energy back, keep overcoming decision fatigue, and let’s build something beautiful.
