A clear plan to rebuild your life

A Clear Plan to Rebuild Your Life When You Feel Lost.

A Clear Plan to Rebuild Your Life When You Feel Lost.

How do you find a way forward when life suddenly throws you off course?

Whatever storm you went through, whether it was addiction, a broken marriage, or just realizing you are not living the life you actually wanted, it usually comes down to the same problem. You get motivated, you make some changes, and then life throws something at you.

Sometimes it is the car breaking down the same week rent is due. Other times it is quieter than that; it is just a bad week where old habits feel easier than the new ones. Just like that, the motivation is gone, and you do not know what to do next. If you want to move forward and not fall back into old patterns, you need a solid plan to rebuild your life.

Terry and I know that feeling intimately. When we went through this, we were completely lost. We were rebuilding mostly by trial and error, making small, intentional choices and taking one step forward each day, hoping it would lead us somewhere better.

At first, neither of us knew what to do. However, we developed a plan to rebuild your life.

At first, neither of us knew what to do. Terry kept showing up and listening to others who went through what he did. He went to his meetings. He made the coffee before everyone got there, and he put the chairs away after. He kept riding his bike and walking every morning, putting one foot in front of the other.

I did not know what to do either. I just knew I wanted to do what God wanted me to do, so I took the bus to church to find out. I also started reading inspirational books and eventually joined a hiking group and a cycling club. For me, a poem came first out of nowhere. Writing became part of how I healed, and I kept doing it until it turned into a poetry collection. Sharing it out loud at readings in front of people was a huge part of the healing, too.

Starting over was incredibly difficult without a plan to rebuild your life.

Yes, starting over was incredibly difficult without a plan to rebuild your life. I began with bad debt, no car, no job, and no home. Getting back on my feet was harder than it needed to be because I did not have a clear next step. I only had a lot of small ones I found on my own.

But once I found something that worked, it became easier. I built a way to determine my values and set my goals, and within a year, I had reached every one of them.

Later on, after Terry and I got married, we talked about what we had actually been doing in our own recovery. When we laid it out, it was not really about his alcohol abuse or my abusive marriage. It was about showing up daily, being honest with someone else, rebuilding small habits one at a time, and having a structure to follow instead of guessing.

We realized we had two completely different stories, but almost the same steps. Whether you are recovering from addiction, abuse, divorce, or a sudden financial loss, your specific path will look a little different. However, the framework underneath those actions, how you rebuild your habits, determine your values, and use your unique strengths, is very similar.
